CONSERVATION & WEATHERIZATION

Windows:

In an effort to maintain the security and structural integrity of the Estate’s historic buildings, as well as offer a considerable effort to conserve energy and contain utility costs, there are more than 400 windows throughout the property of no historical value that need to be replaced.  Each will be difficult and labor-intensive to remove, and they will be replaced with multi-paned, insulated, argon gas-filled units.  Each window replacement will cost approximately $400.00, and your generosity in helping us purchase them is greatly appreciated.

Skylights:

The brilliant design by Horace Trumbaur incorporates several skylights over interior glass features, which enable visitors to navigate the building without artificial light during the day.  Unfortunately, improper roofing repairs made over the life of these magnificent structures has rendered them ineffective protection from the elements and beyond repair.  The two largest must be replaced with single pane polycarbonate units, and the remaining seven must be resealed.  Donations of any size are greatly appreciated.

Water Saver Toilets:

Throughout the six historic buildings at the Elkins Estate, there are approximately 100 toilets.  Rather than continue to flush away money on wasted water, our goal is to convert these facilities to water-saver models.  Donations of any size of greatly appreciated.

Insulation and Weather-stripping:

The attic spaces of all six buildings are un-insulated to date and require modernization to ensure energy efficiency.  All doors and existing windows require weather stripping to ensure that the climate control systems throughout the Estate are as effective and efficient as possible, an especially important focus due to the magnitude of the structures.  Donations of any size are greatly appreciated.
